Okay, cut the dry big ideas, The Social Network features the drama of the man, no, wait, the men who brought us Facebook.

For starters, Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) spoke in a ‘debate’ mode with witty cutting sentences to his girlfriend, Erica (Rooney Mara), a sign of intelligence, soon down spiraling to condescending and insensitive remarks, which he probably doesn’t even realize it’s insulting and hurting.

Erica broke up with him and he tries to negotiate. Not even pacify.

Man, he’s a social inept. Perhaps just low EQ.

Broken-hearted, angsty yet unable to express his devastation, he resorts to—yes, that’s right—programming and blogging.

Needless to say, it ballooned into a series of events, thanks to clever direction and cinematography, juxtaposed with scenes of the ongoing separate lawsuits filed against Mark by the Winklevoss twins, and Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), Mark’s best friend and co-founder of Facebook.

Mark’s social awkwardness caused him to appear scheming and neurotic, and as the audience, we feel alienated from him. And while you think it’s ironic how a social inept created a social networking site to feel connected, maybe it is a possibility he did so because it’s the one way he knew how too.

Well, at least the constant refreshing of Erika’s Facebook profile suggested it’s his way of still feeling connected to her.

Perhaps that’s the film’s representation of Mark Zuckerberg. He might not be as such a person for all we know.

But there’s something for us to think about.

Why bother to watch The Social Network then?

Answer: Don’t coop yourself up at home and camp in front of Facebook, before you evolve into a full-blown virtual social-networker and real life social inept with diminishing EQ. Give yourself the occasional break and catch The Social Network.
